"Hearty Maine Hello!" ~ a University of Maine greeting!
My name is Margaret “MaggieBeth” Turcotte Seavey. I'm a recent graduate of the University of Maine, where I studied Earth & Climate Sciences with a concentration in Geology and a minor in Astronomy. While in college I was a six-term NASA intern --- spending five terms at Headquarters --- and a Student Consultant at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
NASA is where I study astronomy by learning from distinguished mentors in astrophysics, exoplanets, and earth sciences, and by conducting meaningful research across exoplanet detection, astrobiology, and increasing diversity in the Agency. This is "major" to me!
Beyond research, I greatly value outreach and mentorship in astronomy. I was a planetarium show presenter at the Versant Power Astronomy Center for three years, where I gave shows for general and youth audiences and interacted with patrons in various formats. I also worked as a Learning and Teaching Assistant for Introductory Astronomy for three semesters in both in-person and virtual formats.
I find joy in mentoring students interested in pursuing astronomy and increasing diversity in the field. As an alumna of the Summer Science Program in Astrophysics, I have mentored recent program alumnae through the college applications process with successful outcomes as a "SSP Connect" mentor.
In pursuit of balance in my life, I enjoy music. I have played flute for over twelve years, holding performance experience in three UMaine ensembles – Symphonic Band, Orchestra, and Concert Band – and work experience as a concert day assistant for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra for six years, a job I looked forward to every “Symphony Sunday.”
When time allows, I enjoy kayaking, exploring Maine’s rocky coastline, cheering for the Boston Red Sox and other Boston sports teams, and creative pursuits like crocheting, journaling, and watercolor.
